In a press release dated September 2, 2008, Mercedes-Benz USA reported the following:
“Mercedes-Benz USA today reported August sales of 18,507 new vehicles, an 11.8 percent decrease compared to August 2007. On a year to date basis, MBUSA continued to outpace its 2007 performance with sales of 158,519 new vehicles (versus 157,806).
Demand for the company’s volume-leading C-Class boosted that model line’s sales performance by 53.1 percent (6,990 vs. 4,565) for the month. On a year-to-date basis, the C-Class posted a gain of 39.8 percent (50,593 in 2008 vs. 36,184 in 2007). While down for the month of August (2,430 vs. 3,062) the popular M-Class sport utility vehicles continued to hold their gain on a year-to-date basis with a 7.2 percent increase (22,517 in 2008 vs. 21,012 in 2007).
Separately, through the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned program, MBUSA marked a 46.8 percent increase in August sales with 6,440 vehicles sold compared to 4,388 in August 2007, bringing year-to-date sales to a total of 42,973 units, an increase of 23.3 percent over the same period in 2007.

Differences include a lower air intake in front, a bolder grille design with reshaped headlights, twin power bulges for the hood, special side skirts, and a different rear fascia. “That you’re in the AMG version won’t go unnoticed by the impoverished who can only afford Porsche Boxsters,” said Road & Track.

The volume-leading entry-level C-Class model line demonstrated a significant increase with a 49.6 percent gain (6,713 vs. 4,486 units). On the other end of the portfolio, sales of the high-end luxury CL coupes were slightly above last March with nearly a 1 percent increase (297 vs. 295 unites). The popularity of the sleek CLS-Class grew from 803 units last March to 935 units this March, an increase of 16.4 percent. In the SUV segment, M Class sales jumped 21.8 percent (3.189 vs. 2,619 units).
For the first quarter of 2008, the biggest increases in Mercedes-Benz sales were posted for the C-Class model line with 39.6 percent gains (17,141 vs. 12,282 units) and the M-Class model line which rose 28.5 percent (9,507 vs. 7,401 units).”
